Installed a TikTok Mod APK? Here’s What to Do Now
Don't panic. A 15-minute recovery plan: uninstall, scan, secure your accounts, check for toll fraud.
Already installed a modded TikTok? Don't panic — but don't wait either. Work through these steps in order; the whole process takes about fifteen minutes and closes nearly every door a malicious mod could have opened.
## Step 1: Uninstall the mod
Go to Settings → Apps, find the modded TikTok, and uninstall it. Don't just delete the icon — do a full uninstall so its data and background services go with it. If the app resists uninstallation or reappears (a known trick of aggressive adware), boot into Safe Mode and remove it from there.
## Step 2: Scan your phone
Run a Play Protect scan: open the Play Store, tap your profile → Play Protect → Scan. Then, if you want a second opinion, install **one** reputable mobile antivirus from the Play Store (Malwarebytes, Bitdefender, or similar — check the developer name and review count like you would for any app) and run a full scan. Remove anything it flags. Afterwards, you can keep or uninstall the scanner — don't keep three of them running; they fight each other.
## Step 3: Secure your TikTok account
This is the important one. On a clean browser or the freshly installed official app:
1. **Change your TikTok password** — use a strong, unique one (a password manager helps).
2. **Turn on two-step verification**: Settings → Security → 2-step verification. Use an authenticator app or SMS — either beats nothing.
3. **Review logged-in devices**: Settings → Security → Manage devices. Remove anything you don't recognize. A modded client may have created sessions you can't see from inside the mod itself.
## Step 4: Secure linked accounts
If you logged into TikTok with Google, Apple, Facebook, or your phone number — or if you entered any of those credentials anywhere near the mod or its download page — change those passwords too, and check their security pages for unfamiliar sessions. Credential theft is the highest-value payload in these mods, precisely because one login unlocks so much else.
## Step 5: Check for toll fraud
Open your carrier's app or your last two phone bills and look for premium SMS charges, unknown subscriptions, or "value-added services" you never signed up for. Toll-fraud malware is designed to stay under the amount you'd notice casually. If you find charges, dispute them with your carrier and ask them to block premium SMS entirely — most carriers will do this on request.
## Step 6: Reinstall the official TikTok
Only from [the official sources](/download) — Google Play or the App Store, verifying the developer name. Log in fresh with your new password and 2FA. Your account, followers, and drafts live on TikTok's servers, so they'll be there waiting (unless the account itself was banned — see [the ban reality](/posts/tiktok-account-ban-tos) if that's your situation).
## Step 7: Watch for aftershocks (one week)
For the next week, keep an eye out: unexpected SMS, password-reset emails you didn't request, logins from unknown locations, battery drain or heat (signs something is still running). If anything looks off, repeat the scan and consider a factory reset as the nuclear option — back up your photos and chats first.
## You did the right thing reading this
Most people never look into what they installed. You did, and fifteen minutes of cleanup now beats months of fallout later. Share [the red-flags checklist](/posts/fake-tiktok-download-red-flags) with whoever sent you the mod link — they'll thank you eventually.
